The Sarpaneva Korona K1 Emali tells more than just time. This timepiece is actually a tribute to Stepan Sarpaneva’s late father, Pentti Sarpaneva, and “centuries of enamelling in fine watchmaking.”

Pentti Sarpaneva (1925 to 1978) was a Finnish designer well-known for his jewellery, bronze and glass objects and he had used vitreous enamel that was “fired” for his jewellery designs more than 50 years ago.

On the dial of the K1 Emali are “razor-sharp hands and a brushed stainless steel ring” paying “humble homage to his heritage”.

The enamel dial of the K1 Emali brings out a whole new dimension for Sarpaneva as it delivers clean aesthetics, making it seem more like a fine art object rather than just a horological instrument.

It will be a rather rare and most probably a valuable object as only eight pieces will be crafted.

When viewing Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Grande Tradition à Quantième Perpétuel 8 jours SQ or the skeletonised perpetual calendar watch with 8 days of power reserve, do take note of three main handcrafted elements: the skeletonising, engraving and enamelling.

The skeletonised movement is apparent and so is the transparent blue enamel work on the rim of the dial where the hour indexes are represented. The blue enamel can also be viewed from the rear of the watch.

Look closer and one can see the hand-engraved guilloché work on the bridges and various components. The hand-engravings are more prominent at the rear of the movement.

The translucent blue enamel on the dial rim can also be seen from the rear where the hand-engravings or guilloché work are more apparent.
